Hong Kong
Pasta de Waraku

Italian food, Japanese style

Pasta de Waraku is an upscale version of Te. But the Singaporean chain has gone one step further in their first shop in Hong Kong by taking the pop-casual noodle eatery and adding curries, pizza, and rice pilaf dishes to the menu. The décor is cheap-chic, with a plastic version of each dish on display throughout the sunlit restaurant of the new CityWalk shopping centre, and chopsticks, forks, and knives are held in baskets on the table for self service.

We started with their signature Carbonara Waraku style ($68), a bed of spaghetti smoothened with cream, thick bacon strips, and a soft-boiled egg on top. The egg yolk was too overcooked to coat the strands of pasta, so we opted not to mess with it. Otherwise, the creamy bacon sauce was fast-food perfect.

The chain is also known for its soup-based pastas, so we ordered the scallop and mushroom spaghetti with Japanese style soup ($78). The scallop was soft to the bite, while the mushrooms added nice flavour to the sweet broth. The seaweed seeped into the soup and gave a wonderful slimy chew.

Now, the spicy cod roe and potato pizza ($58) was definitely something to write home about: a thin spread of fish roe was spread on thick potato slices and glued onto thin cracker dough with cheese and mentai mayo. Heavenly. Ditto for the pork salami, tomato, and wafu tomato sauce pizza ($38). Of course by then we were all carbed out, but we’re already planning another visit to try the bacon and kimchee pizza.
