Hong Kong
Mido Cafe

We came here for lunch and were delighted by the flavours from the classic Hong Kong food in this old-school cafe. This was not the first time we had been to Mido, so when we got great dishes, we were happy that they have consistency.

We were given a seat in a 'booth' by the window on the corner overlooking the Tin Hau temple. The guy in charge of the floor (I'm guessing he's a family member) spoke great English and was attentive.

We ordered fried ho fen (flat, white rice noodles) with sliced beef in dark soy sauce, yeung chow fried rice and two milk teas (one hot, one cold). They asked if I wanted my iced one sweet, and it came to me just the level of sweetness I like.

The ho fen came out and it was glorious. The rice noodles were coated in a wonderful thick dark soy sauce and the beef was like butter - it was so soft. The salty, soft and chewy (from the great ho fen noodles) combination was great. I could easily have eaten two plates of the stuff. What was stopping me was the equally awesome fried rice. Yeung chow fried rice is basically what in the UK would be called special fried rice. It had great chunky prawns, some roast pork and ham and peas and other small vegetables. The rice was really good. Not too greasy and super satisfying. It had a lovely salty kick from the pork and it ate really well. It was comfort food of the highest order.

We will return to Mido many times, as the prices are as good as the food. The ho fen dish was $50 and the rice $40. The service was quick and friendly and the place has a very comfortable feeling about it. It is time worn in the way that new places try to emulate.
