La Baguette

The food at this tiny, tucked away French/Italian eatery in the backstreets of Kennedy Town is immensely satisfying, the setting unpretentious, atmosphere down to earth, and service discreet and informed. With only six tables, one of them a black leather booth for no more than four people, it’s certainly cosy, but yet feels far from cramped. Red mosaic tiles and dark furnishings give it a modest European feel, which lends itself well to the candle light and smooth jazz. Food is given pride of place here, the semi open kitchen taking up about half of the available space. The cuisine consists of original takes on classic dishes, created with care and precision by a team of immaculately dressed young chefs.

After enjoying complimentary warm bread (fresh from the neighbouring bakery) with olive oil, we tried the foie gras accompanied with duck confit in pastries. It was probably the best liver we have ever had, a moment of crispness before it disappeared in a melty moment ($148). Next up were the warm asparagus salad with smoked mackerel and smoked salmon with rocket and horseradish (both $75). Whoever puts together the menu has a great eye for detail and matching flavours, the plates were perfectly balanced. The filet steak with peppercorn and polenta fries was well-cooked and again, presented beautifully, ($148) as was the delicious lobster risotto with scallops ($180). We enjoyed their Emmental cheese burger with pickles, Dijon mustard and homemade fries ($80), and their stone-baked pizzas are popular in the area, ($90-$140) For dessert, the apple crumble was a slight disappointment, topped with a dry, biscuit crumble that was too savoury and bland ($55). However, the crème brulee with mixed berries ($48) was better, and the coffee was tasty, strong and nutty, obviously stocked by someone who cares.

If you want to eat food prepared with skill and originality in relaxed, classy surroundings, served by experienced waiting staff, you must try La Baguette, and if you’re a Kennedy Town resident, it may well become a regular haunt.
